FIGHT CLUB.
The stuff you heard about me is a lie.
Iâm way worse.
LEGEND
* * *
One final blow straight to the side of his jaw was enough to lay Legendâs opponent down. He was some white boy who was known around the city for knocking niggas out.
Not anymore.
The small arena was packed beyond the legal limits. But the owner didn't give a fuck about what was legal. The only thing that Luis cared about was the bread.
Nothing they did here followed the rules. Being here, doing what they were doing was enough to get Luis locked up and the club shut down for good.
This was a fight club, but it was known around the city as âThe Murder Den.â People didn't come here just to tap someone up right quick on their lunch break before going back to work. Or to blow off some steam before facing wifey at the crib. This was where motherfuckas like Legend came to tame the demons riding their backs. Shooters, serial killers, rapists, and whoever the fuck else was collecting bad karma like Pokémon cards came here in between time to feed the demons whoâd become part of their entourage over time. Legend didn't personally know everybody's storyâthis place wasn't for talk therapyâbut he could tell by looking a man in his eyes whether or not he'd caught a body before.
And here? There wasnât a single person who hadn't caught plenty. They were the devil's children. And Luis was like the devil himself, collecting payment for every soul he stole. The only difference was they handed theirs over to him freely.
âLegend!â Luis called, walking over to Legend with his lips curved into a greasy smile and his hands on top of his bulbous belly.
When Legend first met Luis, he was thin and gauntly in appearance with a scraggly beard that didn't completely fill in. Now he was one of the most finely dressed Italians Legend knew. His business survived off Legendâs back. And business was always good.
âYou made a lot of money tonight,â Luis said, nearly singing a tune as he approached Legend with his arms wide. âIâll have your share delivered to your room, as usual,â he added with a wink. In other words, he was going to have some chick come deliver the cash to Legend along with a shot of ass. He wasnât interested in either, honestly.
He didnât do this for the women. He didnât even do this for the money. He did this because he had no other choice.
When you grew up the way he had, lived the life he lived, and made more deals with the devil than you cared to count, it was hard to live in a way that didnât involve pain. Sometimes his, but specifically, someone elseâs.
Legend was miserable without it. Too much quiet made his demons bored. And if he wasnât entertaining them by beating the shit out of someone else, they decided to torture him. His body was free, but he was in prison. His mind belonged to them.
